It takes about 40 volunteers each month to distribute food to our neighbors in need in an efficient manner. We never know what foods we will receive from Foodlink in advance. It’s a mystery until the delivery truck backs into our parking lot and its back door opens to reveal what’s inside. As we unload the items we also need to figure out how many of each item we can give to the families in line. At the end of the day, we need to give away all the food, but we also want to make sure everyone gets a fair share.
David Snell has taken on the job of calculating how much we receive of each item, and how many we should distribute to each family so that we don’t have large amounts left over. It’s fairly complicated, especially because we are trying to work quickly so the clients aren’t standing in line for too long a period. When it’s hot out, we work as fast as we can to keep food from spoiling. David’s numbers are important for each volunteer to know quantities to distribute for their particular food station.
David and the Snell family are faithful volunteers each month. David and his brother, Jonathan, also get called upon to use their brawn as well as their brains. We always need tall helpers to move food down from stacks that are often more than six feet high. They can also help move cases of food that some of our seasoned volunteers shouldn’t be lifting.
We had another successful Foodlink last Thursday. More than 180 families were served, representing more than 500 individuals . Thank you to all our volunteers for their help.
Our next distribution date is September 19. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 2:45 pm. We start unloading the truck at 3 pm and distributing food by 4 pm.
